43 dead as fire engulfs Chinese disco
At least 43 revellers died as a fire caused by fireworks swept through a Chinese nightclub, causing a mass stampede for exits.
In a horrifying echo of the USA's 'Great White' tragedy, the 43 dead revellers and a further injured 88 were engulfed in the blaze and the resulting crush. Eye witnesses said the venue had only one narrow aisle and lights failed during the fire. The club, the Dancers of Schenzhen, was in a three story building and police said many windows had been boarded up. In 2000, more than 300 people died in a disco fire in Luoyang caused by a welding accident.
