Protective Security, or Close Protection, has been necessary for centuries. Roman generals had the Praetorian Guard to be their bodyguards. These bodyguards were usually heavily armed and went everywhere with their general or other important person, to deter would-be attackers. Today, Close Protection is far more involved, with the emphasis being on avoiding danger where possible rather than dealing with it when it happens. Close Protection Officers are more than bodyguards, they are Risk Managers.
In addition to having the responsibility for protecting their Principal from physical attack, such as assassination, kidnap or personal assault; Close Protection Officers also protect their Principal from loss of property, reputation and confidential information. This protection is provided through careful planning after assessing threats and risks to the Principal. With respect to those early Praetorian Guards, today’s Close Prosecution is bodyguarding with brains, not just brawn.
With the increase in terrorism and the activities of fanatical individuals and groups, the need for personal protection is increasing. This means there is now greater need for more professionals who can provide personal protection to diplomats, business leaders, celebrities and other individuals. This is a new era of Close Protection and requires more than a person with just military or martial arts experience. The need for qualified, experienced and competent professionals has never been greater.
The Foundation Degree in Protective Security Management provides students with the opportunity to develop their work-based specialist skills, supported by professional tutoring, both on-line and through workshops. Students on this programme are serving and ex-Armed and Police Services, as well as civilian entrants. Currently we have students working (and learning) in Iraq and Afghanistan, using the Internet to communicate with tutors.
This degree programme takes into consideration previous experience and is extremely flexible. Credit towards a number of modules can be given, based on previous experience and learning. It is only offered through Buckinghamshire New University and is widely recognised by the Close Protection community. | | Graduates from this degree programme find it a most rewarding experience and are often encouraged to go further with their professional development through higher education. It gives the graduate confidence to be recognised as a professional Close Protection Officer, and therefore a significant player on the ‘CP Circuit’.
